LSO St Luke's

LSO St Luke's is a magnificent restored Hawksmoor church, and is home to the London Symphony Orchestra's music education programme. An impressive and stylish building , the restored exterior contrasts with a dramatically contemporary interior, and the Jerwood Hall has become a firm favourite with clients for everything from television filming to conferences to bespoke evening hospitality events.

Widely regarded among Nicholas Hawksmoor's and John James' finest creations, St Luke's on Old Street was one of the last churches to be erected in the City of London in response to the Churches Act of 1711. In 1959, after many decades of problems caused by subsidence, St Luke's was declared unsafe and its roof was removed and the interior gutted, leaving Hawksmoor's spire and the outer walls as the only remaining features.

Its conversion to a music education centre began in 2000, and the design preserves many of the building's features – the original walls and window alcoves remain, the church clock has been renovated and the flaming golden dragon restored to its rightful place at the top of the spire. It is now the home of the London Symphony Orchestra's pioneering education programme, LSO Discovery, and is also in regular use for LSO rehearsals and concerts.

The Jerwood Hall is the main space, with flexible staging and theatre-style seating for up to 268 at ground level and a further 104 seats in an attractive gallery.

The seating and staging can be retracted to leave the full floor area clear for entertaining, dining and hospitality events for up to 250 cabaret style or 370 standing. With the facilities in the newly-extended Crypt, the centre as a whole is an impressive setting for high-quality presentations and conferences.

The centre combines careful external restoration with a contemporary interior designed to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of activity. State-of-the-art communication systems, audio and video technology make multi-site workshops, video conferencing and satellite broadcasting possible.
